byronic: DC Launching WATCHMEN Prequel Series Without Alan Moore DC Comics have announced that they will launch a new, seven issue prequel series to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic Watchmen which each issue focused on a pre-Watchmen adventure by one of the key characters. Rorschach, Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre and The Minutemen will each receive their own issue with writing duties to be handled by Darwyn Cooke, J. Michael Straczynski, Brian Azzarello, Adam Hughes, Andy Kubert and Joe Kubert. Note who is not on that list. While original Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons has apparently given his blessing to the project notoriously cranky Alan Moore has not and it doesn’t take a genius to guess what Moore’s likely response will be. I’m having major mixed feelings about this. Watchmen is a robust story that has prequels within itself to support the main modern story. This is absolutely not necessary and probably won’t do much service to the original work.
